Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of macaddresslookup.app, including the website, the lookup tools, the downloadable data files, and the public API. Using the site means you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the site.

What we provide

We publish the public MAC address registries issued by the IEEE Registration Authority in a form that is easier to search than the original text files, along with tools built on top of that data. Everything is offered free of charge, without accounts, and without any commitment that it will stay available.

Accuracy

The registry records are reproduced as the IEEE publishes them. We do not verify, correct, or enrich them. Organization names and addresses are whatever the registrant filed, which is frequently out of date: companies are acquired, renamed, and dissolved without ever updating a registration.

You should treat a lookup result as a statement about who registered an address block, not as proof of who manufactured a particular device, who owns it, or where it is. Do not use this site as the sole basis for a decision that matters, and do not treat it as evidence.

Acceptable use

Use of the site is subject to our acceptable use policy. In short: do not attack the service, do not attempt to overwhelm it, and do not use it to harm anyone.

The API and automated access

The API is free and needs no key, which only works if people use it considerately. It is rate limited per IP address, and we may change the limits, require authentication, or withdraw access entirely if usage threatens the service for everyone else.

If you need more than occasional lookups, use the bulk data instead of hammering the API. The full registry is published as static files and as a downloadable XML export, both of which are faster for you and cheaper for us. Cache responses rather than re-requesting the same prefix.

The data

The underlying registry is published by the IEEE and is not ours to license. Our arrangement, presentation, and code are ours. You are welcome to use lookup results in your own work, including commercially. Wholesale copying of the site itself, or scraping it to stand up a competing mirror rather than taking the data from the IEEE directly, is not permitted.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the IEEE.

No warranty

The site is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, that results will be accurate or complete, or that defects will be corrected.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the site. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us, which is nothing.

Availability and changes

We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the site at any time, including URLs, tools, data formats, and the API, without notice. We try to keep established URLs working, because people have linked to them for years, but we cannot promise it.

Changes to these terms

We may revise these terms. The current version is always the one posted here, with its date at the top. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
